River Wheeler

The River Wheeler is a small tributary of the Clwyd that has an established population of brown trout and has runs of sea trout and salmon when the water heights are right. The beat is mainly double bank from the weir downstream to Trout Cottage.

From Denbigh, take the A543 signposted Yr Wyddgrug/Mold Bodfari which after about 1½ miles joins the A541. Turn right at this junction signposted Yr Wyddgrug/Mold. Continue through Bodfari, and about 2 miles beyond the village and before reaching the village of Afonwen, pull into and park in the large lay-by on the right of the road. Access to the upper section of this beat is via a farm gate and across two fields near the Denbigh end of the lay-by. Access to the lower section of the beat is by walking along the roadside in the direction of Denbigh for about 100 yards, turning left onto a farm track and after a few yards negotiating a stile/fence leading to the river bank.

From St Asaph take the A525 towards Trefnant and in Trefnant turn left at the traffic lights onto the A541 signposted Yr Wyddgrug/Mold. Continue through Bodfari after which directions, parking instructions and details are the same as those in the previous paragraph.
