River Clwyd -

Llannerch Beat

Beat Description

This beat, being the club beat nearest to the sea is the one salmon and sea trout reach first once they start entering the river.  There are several good pools on the beat including the one immediately below the bridge. The largest and deepest though is the Flamingo Pool about 400 metres further down.  The Flamingo Pool can be identified by a footbridge that spans it, although at the moment (August 2014) it is unsafe to use and is fenced off   There are also a number of smaller pools all of which hold migratory fish once the fish start running.

This beat also has a growing population of wild brown trout and some really nice fish at that, although the bigger fish aren’t easily fooled.  Many fish seen rising in the early part of the season though are salmon and sea trout parr preparing for their first trip to sea. These fish are small and delicate and should be unhooked without touching them if possible; it is these fish that will make up the next season’s sea trout and salmon run and it is in a situation such as this that the club recommends the use of barbless hooks.

The beat is best suited to spinning and bait fishing but fly fishing is possible although under challenging casting conditions at some locations below the bridge due to tree cover.  Wading is generally safe but there are some deep holes, so care is needed and if you intend to fish after dark, it’s advisable to walk the beat during daylight to note these locations.
