Beat Description
This beat is located upstream from Pont Glan-y-Wern stretching as far as Pont Perfa on the Afon Clwyd and Pont Drefechan on the Afon Clywedog with much of it being double bank, especially on the Afon Clywedog. The beat is quite overgrown and is really wild fishing but it does hold a good head of brown trout, some of them quite big. It can also hold a surprisingly large numbers of migratory fish from June or July onwards depending on rainfall. It’s really challenging fishing with many long slow-moving pools, deep holes and lots of tree and bank cover as well as in-stream obstacles but well worth the effort to fish. Fly fishing is possible in some places but the beat is probably more suitable for spinning or worm fishing. The challenging nature of the beat means that it’s under-fished. So, if you like your fishing to be a solitary experience, this is the beat for you.
How to get there:
If you intend to fish the lower section of this beat between Pont Glan-y-Wern and the junction of the Clwyd and Clywedog, follow the A525 out of Denbigh in the direction of Ruthin and take the Llandyrnog road at the roundabout. Pont Glan y Wern, where the beat starts, is just over a mile along this road. Alternatively, you can approach this lower part of the beat via the B5429 Bodfari to Llandyrnog road turning right at the cross roads signposted ‘Denbigh’ as you enter Llandyrnog.
If you intend to fish the Afon Clwyd or the Afon Clywedog above the junction of these two rivers, take the A525 out of Denbigh in the direction of Ruthin and turn left upon entering Pentre Llanrhaedr signposted ‘Llanynys and Llandyrnog’. After about a mile, the road crosses the Afon Clywedog at Pont Drefechan, the upper boundary of the beat on the Afon Clywedog, and after about half a mile, crosses the Afon Clwyd at Pont Clwyd. The road then continues to Llandyrnog, about another mile further on. The beat can also be accessed from this direction by turning right in the centre of the village (when travelling from the Denbigh or Bodfari direction), signposted ‘Llanrhaedr’.
To access Pont Perfa, the upper boundary of the beat on the Afon Clwyd, turn left off the A525 Denbigh to Ruthin road in Pentre Llanrhaeadr, follow signs for Llanynys and turn left in Llanynys. Pont Perfa can also be accessed from the Llandyrnog direction by turning right about a mile after passing through the village (when travelling from the Denbigh or Bodfari direction) along a road signposted ‘Llanynys and Rhewl’.
Possession of an OS map of the area would be a distinct advantage in helping to direct you to Pont Clwyd, Pont Drefechan and Pont Perfa when making your first visit to any of these locations.
Parking:
If you’re intending to fish the bottom part of the beat, park in the club car park in the field on the right of the Llandyrnog road (when travelling from the Denbigh direction), immediately after passing over Pont Glan-y-Wern. There is a combination lock to access the car park. New season members will be informed of the combination upon joining. Day ticket holders will be notified of the combination when purchasing the permit if they request this information. Please remember to lock the gate behind you once you have entered the car park and also when you leave to prevent unauthorised access. Do not park on the road. Take care when leaving the car park after fishing as visibility to the left, looking towards Pont Glan-y-Wern, is restricted and traffic does move quickly on this section of the road.
When travelling from the direction of Pentre Llanrhaeadr, parking at Pont Drefechan is in the field on the left side of the road immediately before crossing the bridge. There is also parking for one or two vehicles in a lay-by on the left immediately after crossing Pont Drefechan.
When travelling from the direction of Pentre Llanrhaedr, parking at Pont Clwyd is on the left of the road immediately before crossing the bridge.
When travelling from the direction of Pentre Llanrhaeadr, parking at Pont Perfa is on the right of the road immediately before crossing the bridge.
