This is an excellent mainly double bank beat of about one mile in length with plenty of good pools and runs over its entire length.  The first half mile or so is good open water although the remainder is tree lined and the pools are more difficult to access in many places if fishing with a fly.  There is more open water to be found when fishing from the right bank although the river can be crossed with care when the water is low to take advantage of pools best fished from the left bank and breaks in tree cover.

The Afon Ystrad enters the Clwyd just below Pont Glan-y-Wern and the junction pool can be very productive when water conditions are favourable. The club controls the fishing on both banks of the Afon Ystrad for the length of the first field above its junction with the Clwyd and although it is only a short length there are some good fish holding runs and holes along its length and well worth fishing with a wet fly or a worm.

The Glan-y-Wern Beat has a good head of wild brown trout and is a favourite beat with anglers during the early part of the season and on summer evenings with many pools lending themselves perfectly to dry fly fishing.  It is also a good beat for sea trout after a spate and after dark from June onwards.

Fishing with fly, spinner or worm is allowed on this beat and all three methods can be very productive under the right circumstances.
