River Clwyd / River Clywedog - Llanynys

Beat Description

River Clwyd:
Again a beat that is hardly fished but well worth the effort to get to know. Upstream of the bridge the river has suffered from flood defence work that left it rather featureless. Time has been a great healer though and given water this stretch can provide very exciting sport to a spinner on high water. Some pools still remain on this stretch. It is worth keeping an eye on the cows in this area they tend to be a little ‘wild’! Downstream of the bridge again is heavily overgrown but does open out after about 1.5 fields. Here you will find the river meanders with good pools including ‘Llyn Mawr’ (the big pool). In the old Clwyd Angling Club days prior to the two clubs merging, this was the first port of call for anglers following heavy rain from August onwards. Sea trout and salmon were regularly caught in this area but few people fish here now. Well worth a walk given some water from August onwards and remember this stretch will be fishable after rain much earlier than the main river.

River Clywedog:
Lovely water this, pools and runs perfect for the dry fly fisherman. Wild brownies supplemented with stocked fish can give outstanding sport. A 4-5 weight fly rod is perfect to cover every ‘fishy’ spot on this stretch. This area can also throw up the odd surprise, surprising numbers of migratory fish make this stretch their ‘place to hide’ So be prepared especially if you are fishing until dusk!

How to get there:

Pont Perfa can be approached from Llanrhaeadr. Turn for Llandyrnog past Pentre Motors Garage over the narrow bridge (River Clywedog) to a T-junction. Turn right for Llanynys and then left. For the Clywedog, the upper beat can be reached from the Ruthin-Denbigh road, and for the lower beat, turn at the side of the Pentre Motors Garage as above.

Parking:

Parking on the right before Pont Drefechan, and on the upper beat, there is parking in the lay-by on the main Ruthin-Denbigh road.
